There was a moment about two days after surgery when I felt like a useless oaf in my house.
My spouse had taken on her responsibilities and most of mine while I recovered. I could see the extra stress piling up, and eventually I thought, "Screw it. I'm doing the dishes."
What normally took me about 20 minutes took closer to 45.
The biggest challenge wasn't actually cleaning the dishes. It was keeping them still long enough to clean them.
Plates slid around the sink. Bowls rotated every time I tried to scrub them. Glasses tipped over at the worst possible moments.

I found two approaches that made dishwashing much easier.
Let the Water Help
If you don't already fill your sink with water before washing dishes, now is the time to start.
I moved the dishes onto the counter and filled the sink with warm, soapy water. The water acted like a cushion and helped keep dishes from banging around while I cleaned them.
Was it perfect?
No.
Was it better than chasing plates around the sink like they owed me money?
Absolutely.
Use a Folded Washcloth
This became my favorite trick.
Take a large washcloth, soak it, and fold it once or twice. Then place it on the bottom of the sink or on the counter next to the sink.
The towel creates extra friction and helps keep dishes from sliding around while you scrub them.
It works especially well with plates and bowls.
Just be careful with glasses, they still obey the laws of gravity.
